What is a direct quotation? How is it different from a paraphrase? A direct quotation records the exact language used  by someone in a speech or writing.   A paraphrase is also a restatement of a portion of  text in your own words.

Why Use Quotations?       Quotations lend  authority and credibility                            to your work.   When quoting an expert, political figure, artist etc.,  you elevate your own work by placing it in esteemed  company. Quoting helps you  establish background  information in a paper , and allows your reader to  understand your material as reliable.

How To Select Quotes Select quotes that contain memorable language A quote should be so  eloquent or powerful  that to  paraphrase or summarize it would sacrifice much  of the impact and significance of its meaning. Select a quote that is difficult, significant and needs  to be explained.   Avoid quotes that are uninteresting or obvious

When to Quote: Another writer’s language adds interest and  liveliness to your paper Another writer’s language is so clear and  economical that to make the same point in your  words would be less effective When using quotations will help you build a solid  reputation and help you                              establish  authority
