7. Describe the American conflict with the Barbary states. -The Barbary States had preyed on commercial shipping. Most European nations paid the pirates tribute to protect merchants trading in the Mediterranean. Jefferson decided the extortion had become intolerable and dispatched a fleet to the Barbary Coast. A vigorous naval blockade brought hostilities to a conclusion. In 1805, the president signed a treaty formally ending the Barbary War. 8. Explain Marbury v. Madison and its significance . -This was the first time the Supreme Court asserted its right to judge the constitutionality of congressional acts, while contemporaries did not fully appreciate the significance of Marshall’s doctrine, Marbury v. Madison later served as an important precedent for judicial review of federal statutes. 9.
