But allegations of the country's ties to terrorism are putting this friendship, founded on oil, in jeopardy. Timeline 1933 The United States and Saudi Arabia establish diplomatic relations. 1945 Oilforsecurity relationship. 1951 A formal mutual defense relationship. 1963 During the civil war, President Kennedy sends an F100 squadron to Saudi Arabia in response. Aramco, previously controlled by the U.S. 1980 Saudi Arabia gains full control of 1991 Saudi Arabia contributes land and air forces to the U.S.led coalition against Iraq during the Gulf War. September 11 attacks Sept. 11, 2001 Of the 19 AlQaeda hijackers responsible for the attacks, 15 are found to have been Saudi citizens, allegedly operating under the direction of Osama Bin Laden. Jan. 2002 Crown Prince Abdullah maintains that SaudiU.S. relations remain strong. Bilateral Relations Bilateralism comprises the political and cultural relations between two states.
