Lecture 11 (March 23, 2010) The three categories of news: a) Hard news b) Soft news or feature news c) Investigative reports Hard news consists of 5 basic facts: who, what, when, where, how. It is news of important public events, such as government actions, international happenings, social conditions, economy, crime, environment, science, etc. Soft news or feature news are news of secondary importance and can be on various topics, such as science, games, life of important personalities, etc. Investigative reports are detailed reports that contain significant information about matters of public importance. e.g. Michael Jackson dies (hard news) MJ’s life (soft news) Why MJ dies (investigative) How the reporting of any event is done by the media is best known as Marshall McLuhan’s statement: “the medium is the m e ssage” later on revised to “the medium is the m a ssage”.
