Nicholas Oleson December 13, 2011 English 180I-A Final Research Paper White Lightening A Cultural Exploration of Nascar’s Untold History The production of moonshine in the United States has a history as long and rich as the country itself. In fact, accounts of individuals producing moonshine in the United States precede the American Revolution. The act of distilling whiskey has only been illegal during the period of the prohibition; therefore, the production of alcohol is not what makes moonshiners outlaws. Instead of operating a legal distillery, a process that requires one to pay government taxes, moonshiners choose to distill their potent beverage in secrecy. The most dominant region for moonshining in the United States is Southern Appalachia. Therefore, illegal distilleries have historically speckled the Appalachian Mountains. The most significant aspect of moonshining is the location of the illegal distillery. Moonshiners spend countless time searching for the prefect location, which must me two criteria. Since moonshining must be done in secrecy, moonshiners travel deep into the Appalachian forests to seek cover. In addition, the area of cover must be
