Andrada 1 Kristen Andrada Professor Vazquez FYS: Tranformations 29 November 2011 Final Paper on Transformations The holiday season begins not in December but in fact almost a whole month before it. The holidays season is a time of celebration, Americans are reminded of that more so with encounters of holiday themes in the media. Marketing companies have used the media as a communication device to advertise their products to the masses. With holidays that signal feasts and gift giving, companies target audiences of television, radio and the Internet as consumers for their products. Ways to get people to purchase their products include huge bargains such as sales and discounts, extended store hours, and releasing limited edition products only for that season. Americans spend more money during the holiday season than any other time of the year because the media promotes consumerism during the holidays. In Ben Bagdikian’s The Media Monopoly, chapter six describes the audience as the consumer and how media companies change the advertising content to portray to the audience what they want. (I want to include this into the paper. .. not sure how though. .. my teacher told me to include quotes in my paper. .) Television is a way for companies to advertise their products. During the holidays, television companies take turn to air holiday themed advertisements and commercials to remind people of the upcoming occasions; more so to remind Americans that it is the time to go
