The corrected example is: For example, suppose the personnel at a wastewater treatment plant wish to determine if the measured effluent ammonium (NH 4 + ) concentration of 2.3 mg/L NH 4 + violates the discharge limit of 1.7 mg NH 4 + -N/L. The ammonium concentration is [NH 4 + ]= (2.3 mg/L NH 4 + )(10 –3 g/mg)/(18 g NH 4 + /mol NH 4 + ) = 1.3×10 –4 mol/L NH 4 + This is equivalent to (1.3×10 –4 mol/L NH 4 + )(14 g N/mol N)(10 3 mg/g) = 1.8 mg NH 4 + -N/L; in violation of the discharge limit.
