Week 10 Listening Questions TAIKO 1. Using "One World" or the performance by Cal Raijin Taiko, discuss the visual, physical, and sonic representation(s) of Asian Americans in taiko performance. How might taiko counter stereotypes of Asians or Asian Americans? How does it reinforce them? The performance felt really powerful and was loud. Each strike was solid and distinct. There are sterotypes that asian male or not masculine and more on the femine side but Taiko counteracts this and shows that there is a masculine side to Asian males. Taiko is a group activity but the participants follow the leader which reinforces the sterotype that Asian people just follow orders. 2. How has taiko performance shifted in moving from Japan to the U.S.? Argue for or against seeing taiko as authentic Japanese culture in the U.S. When it was in Japan, Taiko was used for religious purposes.
