Paper logistics Format: 5 double-spaced pages, 12 font Due: Monday, April 25, at the beginning of class. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS. Paper Topic (20 points) In your essay, be sure to: List and briefly describe the main characteristics of bureaucracy and bureaucrats OR of McDonaldization and consumers. Elaborate on these characteristics through a discussion of your personal example, paying particular attention to the ones you consider particularly salient for your case Discuss the irrational rationality of the situation, the particular role you played in it, and your attitudes before and after it. Identify at least one positive aspect of the situation you are examining. To what extent does your example reflect Webers and Ritzers negative attitude to the impact of rationalization on society? To what extent, do you think, is your example typical of the situation/setting? SOCIOLOGY 313 Development of Sociological Theory 2 Max Weber The McDonaldization Thesis by George Ritzer The McDonaldization thesis in a nutshell The McDonaldization thesis is explicitly conceived as a modern rendition of the process of rationalization as identified by Weber McDonaldization is the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of society. McDonaldization, possessing clear continuities with Taylorism, has not only revolutionized the restaurant business but is also transforming American society, and ultimately may transform the world. 3 The McDonaldization thesis in a nutshell (continued) McDonalds, Ritzer suggests, is becoming the model for the efficient, formally rational delivery of an increasing range of goods and services, including such diverse areas as shopping, religion, health care, the management of death, many areas of sports and leisure and also higher education. What the McDonalidization thesis seeks to show is the steady advance and insidious effects of the spread of a process of formal rationalization that drives out other forms of production and organization....
