Isaac Schamis Assignment 1 In any large city, precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of not only drivers on the road, but also the pedestrians that walk them. Now add an extra 50,000 college students, many of which do not have cars, and there is an urgent pedestrian safety issue at hand. That is the problem we currently face in Gainesville, Florida. With public transportation and walking being two primary means of travel, it is important to look at improving the wellbeing of pedestrians. Two ways that the safety of pedestrians could be improved would be to build wider medians that people walking could stand on in the middle of multi-lane roads, and to install traffic circles in place of 4-Way stops. The first measure that could be taken to improve pedestrian safety would be to build wider medians in the middle of multi-lane roads. As a pedestrian myself, I know that j walking is something that is not safe and many times not legal, however, I always see people crossing the

Instead of trying to fight this, the city should just build wider medians to harbor the pedestrians that made it half way and then had to stop for oncoming traffic. This would reduce the chance of being hit by a car and improve safety. A second measure would be to install traffic circles in lieu of 4-way stops. Four-way stops are confusing to pedestrians who never know when to cross and fear the impatience of drivers who are just waiting for their turn to screech off the line. Traffic circles slow down traffic and promote a steady flow that encourages cars to yield to pedestrians crossing the street where there are designated crosswalks. Widening the medians of multi-lane roads and building traffic circles would enhance the safety of pedestrians in the City of Gainesville....
