Study Guide 1 for Overview - Chemical Bonds (Kopachik) Reading from Chapter 2 (optional CEM 141 review) and Chapter 3 46-47, 50-55 The following vocabulary terms were introduced in lecture. Define, describe or illustrate the following vocabulary terms and use the term in context in a sentence to make an important point. acid: a substance that increase the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution adenosine triphosphate: ATP, adenosine attached to a string of three phosphate group, an adenine containing nucleoside triphosphate that releases free energy when its phosphate bonds are hydrolyzed; this energy is used to drive endergonic reactions in cells anabolism: synthesis Base: a substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution catabolism: degradation Central Dogma: DNA (transcription) RNA (translation) Protein compartment: covalent bonds: two atom share one pair or more pairs of electron enantiomer (optical isomer): isomers that are mirror images of each other and that differ in shape due to the presence of an asymmetric carbon eukaryotic cell: a type of cell with a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. hydration shell: the sphere of water molecules around a dissolved ion hydrogen bonds: weak chemical bond that is formed when the slightly + hydrogen atom of a polar covalent bond in one molecule is attracted to the slightly negative atom of a polar covalent bond in another molecule or in another region of the same molecule Hydrophilic: have affinity for water Hydrophobic: no affinity for water; tending to coalesce and form droplets in water ionic bonds: attraction between oppositely charged ion macromolecule: a giant molecule formed by the joining of smaller molecules, usually by a dehydration reaction. Eg: protein, nucleic acid Molarity: mole/L, common measure of solute concentration
