MUSC 130 Survey of Music Literature Discussion Sections 0104, 0105, and 0109H Fall 2011 MUSCIAL VOCABULARY General Terminology for Reading Sheet Music: 1. Pitch- The position of a tone (sound frequency) within the musical spectrum. Pitches are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet. Pitches may be unaltered, sharp (#), or flat (b). 2. Interval- The distance between pitches (unison, 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th , 5 th , 6 th , 7 th , octave) 3. Chord- Three or more pitches, typically each a third apart, sounded simultaneously Triad- a chord of three notes each the interval of a third apart (ex. C-E-G) 4. Note- The physical representation of a pitch and its duration 5. Rest- The physical representation of a silence and its duration 6. Staff- The collection of five lines and spaces that work as a graph to help indicate pitch. 7. Clef- A character put at the beginning of a staff to indicate the position of one note and by consequence the other notes in the musical spectrum. 8. Key- The relationship between pitches that establishes a single pitch as the most important or the tonal center of the piece. The Key of a piece of music is indicated by a key signature and labeled by the letter name of the pitch that establishes the tonal center. 9. Key Signature- The collection of sharps or flats at the beginning of a piece of music the number of which indicate the key. 10. Time Signature- Indicates the meter. The fraction shown at the beginning of a piece of music that indicates the meter. The bottom number indicates what note value gets the main beat (for example, the main beat is usually a quarter note or an eighth note) and the top number indicates how many beats occur in one measure. 11.
