1/11/12 ACCT 324 Notes Anarchy- is a country without law (do anything you want whenever you want, no consequences) Democracy- we elect officials who run the country o Congress o Senate o Judicial, executive, and legislative branch Laws are essentially contracts within ourselves o Private law- regulates disputes between private individuals or groups Ex) if a store owner is delinquent in paying rent to the landlord, the resulting dispute is governed by private law o Public law- controls disputes between private individuals or groups and their government If a store dumps waste behind its building in violation of local, state, or federal environment regulations, public law will resolve the dispute o Civil law- an argument where 1 citizen can sue another citizen, a citizen can sue the government, or the government can sue the citizen Civil cases involve either two individuals or two organizations The plaintiff has the proven of burden, there job is to get it a little over 50% in order to win the case against the government Civil trials always take away money o Criminal law- the state against the individual or corporation
