A short intro to statistics Population:  the set of all measurements of interest to the sample collector. Sample:  any subset of measurements selected from the population. Objective of statistics:  to make an inference about a population based on information contained  in a sample. Data description Graphical methods may be used to “picture” your data so that it is easier to examine.   Pie charts or bar charts of categorical variables Frequency tables and histograms of quantitative data Use the stem-and-leaf!!! For single variables, we can describe the data using measures of central tendency  and variability . Central tendency:   mode:  the measurement that occurs most often median:  middle value when the measurements are arranged from lowest to highest mean:  sum of the measurements divided by the total number of measurements The mean of the sample is denoted by x-bar or y-bar.
