MATHEMATICS 2230, 2011-2012, FALL TERM PROBLEM SET 3, POSTED SEPTEMBER 8, DUE SEPTEMBER 15. This week you should finish reading Section 1.6 (I imagine many students haven’t read it yet, and read Section 1.7. Of course everything is of fundamental importance: linear transformations, limits, geometry of R n , compact sets, the fundamental theorem of algebra, etc. For this course, derivatives as linear transformations are if anything more fundamental . Again, I expect it to be sort of foreign to most students, but not really very difficult.

Unformatted text preview: Do the following exercises: Exercises 1.7. 1.7.1 (b,d), 1.7.2, 1.7.6, 1.7.11,1.7.16, 1.7.20, 1.7.23. Exercises 1.6. 1.6.4, 1.6.5, 1.6.7 (this is surprisingly hard: remember that we are not assuming that f is continuous), 1.6.11. I think that this problem set is rather short (though the reading assignment is rather long).
