How is this knowledge acquired and put to use? How do languages vary, and how do they change over time? The discipline of Linguistics aims to answer these questions and others concerning the different aspects of human language. This course provides a survey of several core subfields of linguis- tics, including morphology, syntax, semantics, phonetics, and phonology, as well as an introduction to other areas of linguistics, such as psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, historical linguistics, and typology. Linguistics 1101 has no prerequisites and welcomes students from all disciplines. The course fulfills various Arts College distribution requirements and is a prerequisite for most other Linguistics courses. It also provides a foundation for further study in philosophy, psychology, computer science, and other cognitive science sub-fields. Required Text:
