Air Flow Sensors Mass Air Flow sensors can produce a digital signal which has a frequency that proportional to the amount of air entering the engine (Frequency Modulation). For example, a mass-air flow sensor may have a low frequency at an idle; however, the frequency will increase with increased air flow as engine speed increases. There are two types of digital mass air flow sensors: The sensor shown below uses the frequency of the digital signal to indicate the air flow rate. This sensor requires an additional air temperature sensor in the intake ducting to monitor air
