Electromotive Force Remember: A positive ion is an atom that is missing electrons and a negative ion is an atom that has extra electrons. Imagine that we could take a container and begin to fill it with positive ions. The first ion could be easily placed into the container, but the second and subsequent ones would be harder to place into the container. This is because they have like charges and are repelled by each other. Eventually it would take a great force to place another ion into the container, not to mention keep the other ions from coming out of the container at the same time. Now imagine that we could take another container and begin to fill it with negative ions.
