J1850-41.6 J1850-41.6 - Ford The SAE J1850.41.6 standard refers to Ford's communication protocol. This protocol has been used by Ford since 1996. With Ford's protocol, each bit of information is 24 us long and has variable voltage pulse widths to represent a logic 0 or 1. This is referred to as Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) system. This is a two wire system much like the new CAN system. The data link connector (DLC) allows a scan tool to communicate with the serial data lines. The serial data lines are the means by which the microprocessor-controlled modules that are connected to it communicate with each other. Once the scan tool is connected to the serial data line through the DLC at pins 2 and 10, the scan tool can be used to monitor each module for diagnostic purposes and to check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
