Modes of Operation Transistors have three modes of operation. Each mode has distinct operating conditions and advantages. Off - When a transistor is off, it stops emitter-collector current; the emitter-collector circuit is an open circuit. Full source voltage will be dropped across the emitter to collector, as would be the case with any open circuit. Amplification - When a transistor is in the amplification mode of operation, the transistor's barrier voltage level has been reached and emitter-collector current has begun to flow. If the small base current is increased by 10%, the larger emitter-collector will also increase by 10%. During amplification the emitter-collector voltage drop will vary from close to full source voltage to close to zero volts meaning there is a variable resistance between the emitter and the collector. This amplification can only occur within specific operating conditions. For example: If the base current is increased, but the emitter-collector current does not increase, the transistor has reached
