Pulse Width Modulation Most computer output devices are controlled by turning them on or off; however, there are some output devices that need to have a variable control. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is the method digital computers use to control variable devices. Pulse-width modulation is a process of applying a pulsing on-off signal of a fixed or variable frequency to the output device. The amount of time the device is on compared to the amount of time (pulse-width) the device is off can be varied. For example: A scan tool can display the fuel injector pulse-width, injector pulse-width typically varies between about 1ms and 20ms. This pulse width will vary with engine load. This variable pulse-width can be adjusted anywhere between being off all of the time to being on all of the time. The actual pulse-width is measured in the percentage of time the signal is high compared to the entire cycle time. This percentage of time is called the duty cycle.
