Scan Tools A scan tool is a hand-held computer which communicates with the on-board computer systems of an automobile. Scan tools have the ability to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), read and display system data, and make requests of computers to activate certain output devices as a diagnostic action. CAN data systems will require either an adapter for current scan tools or a new scan tool to be able to read vehicle data information. The adapters shown below are the CAN diagnostic adapter for the Toyota and Honda, GM, and Ford scan tools. The CAN diagnostic interface module is placed in series with the datalink cable and acts as an interpreter for the scan tool.
