I. Project Summary This project consists of the mathematical modeling and analyzing of a DC motor with a load. The mathematical model was used to create a signal flow graph, in order for a transfer function to be derived. The transfer function consisted of the armature voltage as the input variable, and the angular velocity as the output. The transfer function was then plotted in order to analyze it’s behavior. The sensitivity of the transfer function with respect to the mechanical parameter J L was then plotted and analyzed using a proportional controller. The sensitivity of the closed loop system with respect to J L was required to be under negative 20dB over the frequency range [10,100]. The transfer function was then simplified by eliminating the inductor variable L a. The transfer function was then plotted after this simplification was made in order to analyze the modeling error created by making the simplification. Another simplification was then made by eliminating the non-dominant poles of the transfer function. This simplified transfer function was then plotted in order to analyze the modeling error associated with the simplification. The two simplified models were then compared in order to see which was better. Eliminating the non-dominant poles proved to be a more effective simplification with less error. Therefore, it is recommended for use in feedback control system design. II. Introduction The objective of this project was to analyze the behavior of a DC Motor with a load. The project required the use of the sensitivity function and model simplification. Matlab played a key role in providing supporting materials through graphs and calculations.
