Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote Prokaryote - A simple, unicellular organism, such  as a bacterium, that lacks a discrete nucleus  surrounded by a nuclear membrane, and that  contains its genetic material with in a single  chromosome. Eukaryote - A higher organism (unicellular or  multicellular) that consists of cells that possess a  true nucleus; the nucleus is surrounded by a  nuclear membrane and contains the genetic  material within multiple chromosomes.  Contains  an ER.
