CharacteristicsofMoodle TheUniversityofMinnesotahasitsownMoodleinstallationthatiscustomizedfortheneedsofthe Universitycommunity.Moodleisopensourcesoftware(developerscanmakemodificationsbasedon needs)andtherearenolicensingfees.Moodlecharacteristics: Hasaflat,linearlayout.Thehomepageislikeone,longtableofcontents. Thefilestructureismodular;filesbelongtothesectionwheretheyappearonthehomepage. Thisfacilitatessharingaclusterofinformationwithothers. Ittakesonlyoneclicktoaccessmostcontentfromthehomepage. EverypagehasitsownURL.Thismakesiteasytoidentifyandlinktoanysinglepage. Usessinglesignonthroughcentralauthentication. Supportsautoenrollmentofstudents. Hasalargeinternationalcommunityofdevelopersandsupporters.Thereisextensiveonline supportathttp://moodle.org. 9 PedagogicalPhilosophy Moodlehasbeenguidedbyasocialconstructionistphilosophyoflearningeversinceitscreationin Australiain2002.Themainideaisthatlearningissocial,andthatpeopleconstructnewknowledgeas theyengageandinteractwithothersinasupportiveandrichlearningenvironment.Thereisanemphasis ongroupwork,sharing,collaboration,communication,interactiveactivitiesandcriticalreflection.Moodle documentationsaysthattomoodleis:Theprocessoflazilymeanderingthroughsomething,doingthings asitoccurstoyoutodothem,anenjoyabletinkeringthatoftenleadstoinsightandcreativity. RecommendedBrowsers TherequirementforusingMoodleisawebbrowserandaconnectiontotheinternet. Moodle2.0supportsstandardssupportingbrowsersincluding:Firefox3orlater;Safari3orlater;Google Chrome4orlater;Opera9orlater;MSInternetExplorer7orlater. AlthoughMoodle2.0supportsallstandardssupportingbrowsersfromthelastseveralyears,Moodle supportcontinuestorecommendusingFirefox.IfyoudonothaveFirefoxinstalledonyourcomputer,you candownloadthemostrecentversionatnochargefromhttp://www.firefox.com. StructureandLayout ThebasiclayoutofMoodleisapagewithaheaderandthreecolumns.Thecentercolumncontainsthe contentandactivitiesofthecourse.Thecentercolumnisdividedintosectionstoorganizethecontent intologicalchunks.Theleftandrightcolumnscontainblocks--useful,frequentlyuseditemsformanaging andenhancingyoursite. Theheaderhasthenameofthecourse,additionallinks,andaNavigationbartofacilitatenavigation. ThetopsectionistheGeneralsection.Itisthefirstthingpeopleseewhentheygotoyoursite. Seethescreenshotsonpages18and19foralookattheMoodlelayoutfromtheperspectivesofa studentandaninstructor. 10 Navigation Navigationishowusersexperiencethestructureofyoursite.Ittakesoneclicktoaccessmostcontentand activities.Toaccessanitem,youclickthenameoftheitem.Toreturntothehomepage,youclickthe breadcrumbontheNavigationbarfortheshortnameofyourMoodlesite.Inaddition,youcanusethe backbuttononyourbrowser,aswellastheNavigationandActivitiesblocks. FileStructure ThefilestructureinMoodle2.0wasdevelopedtofacilitatethesharingofindividuallessons.Filesresidein thesameplacewheretheyareaccessed.Therefore,filesarelocatedthroughoutthevarioussections wheretheyareplaced,andnotinonecentrallocation. Theadvantageofthefilestructureisthateachsectionofcontentisselfcontained.Theconsequenceis thatifyoureusethesamefileinanotherareaofyoursite,youwillhavetwoseparatefileswiththesame name.Ifyouneedtoeditthefile,youwillneedtoeditallcopiesofthatfile. TheCoursefilesareareplicatesthefilestructureofpreviousversionsofMoodle.Inthismodel,filesreside inonearea,andyoumakelinkstoindividualfilesfromanysection.Note:Itisnotpossibletodisplaya folderofcontentfromCoursefiles. Roles InMoodle,everyoneenrolledinacoursehasarolethatdetermineswhattheyhavepermissiontodo. Rolenamesandtheirpermissionscanbechangedtofitdifferentsituations. Instructor:Candoanythingwithinacourse,includingchangingtheactivitiesandgradingstudents.There canbemultipleinstructorsinonecoursesite. Designer:AduplicateoftheInstructorrole.Thisroleisintendedforthosewhoaredesigningthecourse, butnotinstructingit. Noneditinginstructor:Canteachincoursesandgradestudents,butdonothavedesignercapabilities. Theycanaccesshiddensites,butcannotalteractivities(e.g.,teachingassistants). EveryonehasonlyoneprofileforallMoodlesites.However,itmaychangeslightlydependingoncontext: publicprofile,personalprofile,orcourseprofile.Whenyouviewyourprofilewithinacourse,youalsosee theblocksforthatcourse,aswellasbreadcrumbstothecourseandtheparticipantsinthecourse. ReusingandArchivingSites Thecontentfromcoursesitescanbereused.Instructorsanddesignerscanmakeazipbackupoftheir courseswithorwithoutstudentdata.Selectedcontentcanbeimportedfromonecoursetoanother.
