Social Evolution Lecture Outline – January 23 Alfred Russell Wallace (1823 - 1913) -British Naturalist, Anthropologist, Geographer, Biologist -Father of biogeography (look at where plants/animals live) -Independently developed the theory of evolution by natural selection -Contact with Darwin (started correspondence in 1855) -July 1858 work of Darwin and Wallace jointly presented at the Linnean Society of London Five independent Lines of Evidence that Evolution is a Reality 1. Geological Proof - Earth is 4.5 Billion Years old -Radiometric dating of meteorite material consistent with oldest-known terrestrial and lunar samples. HOMOLOGOUS STRUCTURES- similarity due to shared ancestry. ANALOGOUS STRUCTURES- due to Convergent Evolution similar solutions to similar adaptive problems (adapting to environment). 3. Biogeography -Life on Earth is not uniform -Diversity of life reflects ecological variation -Plants and animals are adapted to their environments -Plate tectonics Madagascar -165 mya broke away from Africa
