World History, Period 4 April 7, 2008 The Life and Successes of Stalin Joseph Stalin was born in 1979 into a peasant life in Russia. Of all men to lead a great nation Stalin would not have been the obvious choice. Lenin had been the former ruler of the soviet Union until his death in 1924. Stalin succeeded him, yet the ironic part is that Lenin did not want him to be his successor and be the new ruler. Lenin did not see Joseph Stalin as fit for the position. However the decision came down to either Trotsky or Stalin as ruler and Stalin came out on top. The name “Stalin” means man of steel, and he lived up to his name, becoming known as a man who could get things done. Stalin was a leader influenced greatly by the extremely socialistic ideas of Karl Marx. He took Marx’s ideas and transcended them into a political regime called Stalinism, which involved the heavy use of propaganda to create and absolute dictatorship.
