Gothic Art The 3 main characteristic in gothic architecture were 1. Pointed arches- distributed weight to eliminate walls. It presented strength and stability. The roofs held it up rather than the walls 2. Stained glass windows- were a big part in churches. LUX NOVA = concept of using light in the stained glass and meant that it was new light(spiritual) it laminated souls to connect with god. 3. Flying buttresses- made the image appear flying. The exterior support increased the height of the nayve. This allowed opening up the walls and place windows. It went out then over. 1. Ariel view of Chartres Cathedral(angle from northwest ) Chartres, France (1194) It was constructed of two towers. Right( early period) =plain/ simple/ and 30 stories high Left=( new style… early 16 th century) The bells were big that it took 18 men to ring. The side of the wall is what holds it up leading to the buttresses. nayve= splits the two angles trancept= cross the other angle. (Think of an X) Late gothic 2. Madonna Enthroned (ca. 1310) Artist= Giotto Di Bondone … he was the first Renaissance painter to draw in humanism for over 1000 years. Virgin-(Theokos and child between Theodore & George) Renaissance Tried to create images with depth Economic growth development- middle class 3. Giovanni: Amolfini and his Bride (1434) Flemish Artist=Jan Van Eyck…. 1400 yrs Iconography= other images such as dog, fruit on window that surrounded image Mirror= symbolized the allusion to move the image. Window= crated space and put himself to created depth. The shoes were placed in front and it represented the holiness of the couple. Allusion of depth= perspective
