I believe that my biggest contribution to the community has been being a tutor to a struggling middle school kid by the name of Gilbert. Gilbert attends my school and was assigned to me through the program of the National Honors Society so that I can help him bring his grades up and fix his behavioral problems. At first this seemed like an impossible task but I did not give up on Gilbert. Instead I took it one step at a time. First I tried to befriend Gilbert, then I focused more on his grades, and in the end I tried to get him to behave in the classroom. Getting Gilbert to be my friend was the hardest task, but with that done the rest of the tasks would come much easier. Gilbert required a lot of attention so I had to make sure not to get distracted when I was helping him out or else he would call me out on it. I also had to make sure that he knew he could not get away with things around me. Gilbert has this thing where when he first meets people he tries to test them and see how far they will let him get with misbehaving. I had to be able to let him know he could not get very far, without having him see me as the enemy. In the end what helped a lot was that I am an upper classmen with very good grades and also part of the lacrosse team. Gilbert saw these two factors as very impressive and he began to see me as a role model. He soon began to trust me with his problems and started asking me for
