I offer several solutions: inform the public, change veterinarian attitudes, provide incentives, and even increase salaries. The shortage is caused by graduates who are increasingly working in urban areas with small animals. More men than woman are rural veterinarians, and the majority of veterinarian graduates are women (McLaughlin, 2010). In 2009, 1.8 percent of veterinarians exclusively work with large-animals, and 82.5 percent of these were men (Shideler, 2010). Large-animal practitioners have a lower salary than exclusively small-animal veterinarians. This generation’s attitude may have lead to the shortage. The Baby Boomer’s work ethic is long hours and a less pleasant work environment. On the other hand, this recent generation wants companies to provide a more suitable atmosphere (McLaughlin, 2010). Some men in rural areas believe women are not able to perform. Not all women
