Machiavelli and Guicciardini 18/11/2009 23:41:00 Machiavelli: works need to be looked at chronologically The third French invasion—Francis I 1515 Recovery of Milan Alliance with Florence: designed to offset the power of Venice Recovery of mainland territory for Venice: boundary established with French, Venice is the longest lived Italian republic Machiavelli (1469-1527) Very must mistrusted by the Medici 1513: plot against the Medici o Accused of conspiracy o Tortured by Medici regime o Off of charge and tries to gain patronage from Medici (convince them of his work as a political observer) Considered a superb stylist All of his works in the Italian vernacular Most remembered for his political works that are considered a political Triptych o The prince 1513 o The Discourses 1516-19 o The Art of War 1519 Wrote the History of Florence Fundamental assumption o The real, rather than the ideal—men are evil and egotistical (NOT HUMANIST! Men are NOT by nature capable of good)…therefore constant conflict o War is a continuum of political activity—ceaseless conflict between egotistical men, families and states—war (not peace) the natural condition of men o Constancy of Human Nature—actions can be calculated and predicted (you can structure men’s actions) o “Fortuna” (feminine, unpredictable events, need flexibility to deal with that)
