Hart, Gavin APES, Per. 2 November 1, 2019 Chapter 5 Review Questions 1) Southern sea otters are an example of a very important keystone species because they help keep sea urchins and other kelp-eating species from depleting kelp forests, providing more kelp forest habitats for different species. We should and can protect them and kelp forests to allow high biodiversity to continue. 2) Interspecific competition occurs when members of two or more species interact to gain access t o the same limited resources. This allows the population size of both species to not be too excessive. Predation is a biological interaction where one organism, the predator, kills and eats another organism, its prey . This allows the population of the prey to be controlled. Parasitism is a relationship between species, where one organism, the parasite, lives on or in another organism, the host, causing it some harm, and is adapted structurally to this way of life . Mutualism is a symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved . Commensalism is an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
