Topic 21 : Questionnaire Design and Interviewing Open ended Questions : In a typical survey very few open ended questions, takes a lot of time , In open ended question : only the wording of the question is fixed , the respondent is free to answer in his or her own words. The interviewers must record the answer word for word. Close ended questions : The wording of both the question and the possible response categories is fixed. The respondent selects one answer from a list of pre-specified alternatives. Advantages of close ended question : easy to evaluate (code) real risk into channeling the responses in particular direction Advantages of Close ended questions : Provides a useful checklist of possibilities Comparability among respondents : Ensures relevant responses Leaves little to the discretion of the interviewer Take less interviewing time easy to code Very high transmissibility : Control over where you are classified : no one makes the decision after the answers
