Topic 22 : The Traditional Critique The human reaction problem : Traditional critique arose back in the 1970s 1980s : exaggerated claims 5 major aspects of the critique : 1. Human reaction problem : reactivity of the study of human behavior can change the behavior. People know that they are observed so they do their maximum to put their best out there, they do not act the way that they would if they weren’t studied . we are introducing another factor the researcher himself/ herself. The reaction problem is a very big obstacle Defending the political science method : some methods to study behavior that are not reactive (content analysis) not intrusive or aggregate data analysis ( foreign investment and trade) We can say them we are studying something else while we are studying what we are studying We can also take to minimize the reactivity Reactivity is a practical problem : something that you need to be aware of when you do the research 2. Influence of Values : Political science can never be value free because political scientists are value laden individuals studying value laden behavior.
