Quebec and Canada at the Crossroads : a nation within a nation Michael Seymour Nation involve subjective features such as national consciousness and the will to live together. Whether we use an ethnic, civic, cultural , diasporas or sociopolitical concept of the nation, it must be emphasized that any legitimate account must not threat it as if it were an entirely objective phenomena. Objective feature : civic nations are countries Relatively objective features: history, language and culture Nations should not be recognized as such only if they want to be recognized : they are not only imagined communities. National sentiment belonging and belonging to a nation are two different things I may belong to a nation even though I fail to experience any national sentiment or any national pride. A Multinational Canada : Different subjective or objective features of a nation we have to respect them and tolerate them We must tolerate these different national identities and self-representations and afford them all a political recognition in the public sphere. Accepting the fundamental principle of tolerance Quebec as a sociopolitical nation : Francophone living outside of Quebec form a national minority an extension of the French national majority within Quebec. Quebec nation can be understood as a political community containing a national majority of French Quebeckers , national minority of Anglo Quebeckers and individuals having for instance Italian, Jewish, Greek , Haititian or other national origins.
