Lecture 14, Wrap-Up of Thermoregulation and Animal Nuturtion Lecture 20, The Immune System Dr. Paula Lemons BIOL 1104 Lecture 20: The Bodys Defenses Learning Objectives Describe and distinguish between innate and adaptive human defenses against harmful bacteria, viruses, and other substances. Know which cell types and proteins are associated with innate versus adaptive defenses. Explain the inflammatory response depicted in Figure 24.4, including the role of histamine, prostaglandins, and pyrogens. Describe the role of the lymphatic system in the bodys defense. Recreate, using diagrams, the role of B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, and antibodies in the bodys defenses. Distinguish between the primary and secondary immune response. Explain, very generally, how an allergy develops. Look for connections between this material and How class works today We will consider a series of questions pertaining to the Bodys Defenses material covered in Chapter 24 of your textbook. For each question, I will start the question (and the background music). While the timer is running work with your group members to find the answer from your book (or the internet use only reliable sources). Register an answer to the question by the time the music and the timer stop.
