Unformatted text preview: Dr. Paula Lemons BIOL 1104 Lecture 24: Quo Vadis? Learning Objectives Summarize the story of the semester, i.e., “Biology Through the Eyes of the Organism.” Explain the major themes of the semester. Identify examples of the major themes and connections among examples. Describe the hypothesized role of dopamine, lead, and alcohol in ADHD. Apply these ideas to new problems (e.g., disfunction in another neurotransmitter). Recognize that what you’ve learned this semester enables you to more aptly Cecilia has become a good friend. She comes to you because she’s having problems with her course work and her part- time job: She’s failing two of her classes. She has trouble paying attention to lectures. She often forgets assignments, and makes silly mistakes that she doesn’t understand later. She can’t seem to concentrate on class projects that take more than a few minutes. At work, she failed to close the store properly last week, and didn’t even realize the mistakes she made. If things don’t turn around she’s not going to be able to return to UGA in the fall. Work with your group members to come up with a short description of what you think is going on with Cecilia and the evidence for your conclusion. Major: Pre-nursing, she loves biology and loves being around people, but she has to be able to focus better to keep her GPA where it needs to be. GPA: B- and slipping. Relationship status: Has a boyfriend. They fight occasionally. Family situation: Lives with her mom when not at UGA. Cecilia has a younger brother who was just diagnosed with ADHD. Last Facebook entry: “Three more papers and two finals. Extracurricular activities: Sorority. Drug use: She doesn’t drink alcohol or do drugs. Living arrangement : Apartment with two friends. Other stuff: Her mom has hypothyroidism. What’s going on with Cecilia? If a parent or sibling has ADHD 60% chance of having it. Hypothyroidism is a fairly common problem Stressed out. Medical/health questions = Intra-organism questions: Molecules, Cells, Organs, Organ systems Environment al questions = Super- organism questions: Populations, communities, ecosystems Answering Questions about Biology This semester, we have gained resources for answering biological questions (like those about Cecilia). How? By creating “handbooks.” The handbooks’ title: Biology Through the Eyes of the Organism Each one of you have the beginnings of this handbook and your book will become better and better as you add to and edit it (between now and the final exam and after this course)....
