Alyssa Garr Discussion Section 508 Due: January 31, 2012 2. The distribution of major biomes is indicated in the map above. The global pattern of wind is indicated in the second map. What general relationships do you see between type of biome present in different areas and the following? (a) Latitude: Using the equator as a reference for determining relationships between biomes in different areas I explored the concept of latitudinal variation in sunlight intensity. The sunlight hits the tropics most directly which I observed is the closest biome to the equator. In contrast, the biomes that experience a low angle of incoming sunlight at the poles consist of the arctic and alpine tundra. In between the extremities of the equator and the poles these biomes tend to consist of biomes with keen adaptability to variable environments. (b) Prevailing winds and distance from the ocean: Ocean currents influence climate significantly. Because of the high specific heat capacity of water, oceans tend to moderate the climate of nearby land. When land
