Film Analysis How many boundaries have you had to cross solely for the purpose of survival? In a Stephan Hughes award winning film, Where the Heart Is , a young teenager, Novalee Nation, struggles to survive on her own, not only for herself but for the sake of her unborn child, Americus. Novalee lives at Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma for six weeks until her baby is born, after her boyfriend Willy Jack Pickens abandons her on a trip from Tennessee to California when she goes in for a bathroom break, She is left to fend for herself living off of Wal-Mart in order to eat and dress herself. Never feeling part of a real home, Wal-Mart and the friends she meets help begin the life she’s always dreamed of. Dialogue, scenes, and transitions in the film, Where the Heart Is , work together to establish the theme of moral conscious versus survival. Novalee is a very innocent girl, who just wanted to be home. This is why she followed along with her boyfriend when he wanted to move; she had nowhere else to go. Just like when he abandoned her in Wal-Mart she had nothing else to do but stay there and try to survive on her
