Chain Shifts Recall that we’ve discussed two ‘chain shifts’: The Great Vowel Shift (GVS), marking the transition from Middle English to Modern English And the Northern Cities Chain Shift, occurring right now in the United States. These both affect vowels, systematically ‘pulling’ or ‘pushing’ where vowels are made in the vowel space to another location. Like linguistic ‘musical chairs’.
