The Agricultural Wave Driven by labor intensive farming Agriculture was the largest component of GDP. The majority of the population were manual farm laborers. Societies were primarily rural. Global population growth was stagnant.

The Industrial Wave The industrial revolution in England, and later Germany and France, lead to the invention of labor-saving machines and devices, first in agriculture, then in textiles. Key inventions: 1. The steam engine: agriculture, textiles, railways. 2. Electricity. 3. The internal combustion engine: automobiles, aircraft. 4. Steel, oil, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
