Nancy Shaba Women Studies September 27, 2011 Discussion Question #1 How can religion empower women? How can religion disempower them? Religion can empower women by giving them strength and hope in the face of patriarchal family structures and harsh economic condition. Religions are sometimes agents for gender inequality because it presents patriarchy as inevitable inescapable and correct. I think the Roman Catholic religion can disempower women because they will not let women become priests and the Protestant church empowers women because they do allow women to become pastors. Tales with a Point of View The article I read explored what Goddess-worshiping societies looked like. Using historical evidence, the author argues that when almost everyone in the world practiced the religion of the Goddess, the status of women was much higher than it is today. In Christian or Jewish societies they tend to worship males. As the Christian religion rose up, the status of the women in society declined. There were records of Goddesses in Sumer, Babylon, Africa,
