Mehdia Islam Dr. Ketchum AP Biology August 14, 2009 Chapter 47 (1-12) 1) The difference between individualistic models of community composition with interactive model is those individualistic models suggest that each population in a community is there because its own particular abiotic requirements are met by a particular habitat. In the other hand, interactive model of community structure by Clements. He saw the community as the highest level of the organization. Organisms are depended on one another so a species is dependent on biotic interactions such as the food source. 2) The model of the island biogeography suggests that the size of an island and its distance from a population source affect species diversity. When immigration and extinction rates are equal, equilibrium in species diversity develops. The model suggests that the larger the area is the better the chance of preserving more species. The fact that space is limited suggests that there must be an end point beyond which community richness cannot increases. 3) A habitat is where an organism lives and reproduces. The habitat of an animal might be oceans edge, swift stream and forest floor. An ecological niche is the role and organisms plays in its community, including its habitat and its interactions with other organisms. The niche includes the resources an organisms uses to meet its energy, nutrients, and survival demands. 4) The competitive exclusion principle, which states that no two species can occupy the same niche at the same time. Interspecific competitive may results in resources partitioning leading to niche specialization. When similar species seem to be occupying the same ecological niche, it is usually possible to find differences that indicate niche specialization has occurred. 5) Joseph Connell studied the distribution of barnacles on the Scottish coast,
