Race and Space: Apartheid Brief History of South Africa: Settlement, Resources and the meeting of the cultures - Intense fights between indigenous people and Europeans - Mix of cultures in South Africa - People coming from SE Asia and from South Asia - Came with Europeans or on their own - Very multicultural society in South Africa - Large mixed race population - They were referred to as “coloured” (not seen as a derogatory term) - Colonial rulers wanted land so they ended up taking land from indigenous Africans Apartheid - Begins in 1948 ends in 1994 - “Separation” - Official policy of racial segregation - Take existing segregation policies and make them more brutal - Keep races separate - Fundamentally a spatial project (manipulated space) - Spaces were very unequal Petty Apartheid: Apartheid operated at small scales - Different spaces (entrances, benches etc.) - Illegal for different races to marry one another or have sexual relations with one another Grand Apartheid: Segregation of cities -
