Southwest Asia and North Africa: Oil Rich, Water Poor Geography of Oil - This region has 60 percent of the worlds oil reserves - Only 7 percent of the worlds population - Oil is an important physical, economic and political aspect of this region - Unevenly distributed Oil and Wealth: Landscapes of Luxury - Large amounts of wealth in these countries come from the export of oil - A lot of buildings come out of this wealth - Ex. Dubai got its start from oil money - Oil has reshaped this city - Despite the great amounts of wealth there is still poverty within these countries - Uneven distribution of wealth - Wages are often very low and living conditions are not very good in most cases for workers - Oil produces a great amount of wealth for some people but not for everybody - This leads to tensions in the country Oil, Power and Geopolitical Conflict - Oil by itself often does not promote conflict - Oil is usually just one aspect of the conflict - Control of oil by foreign companies, resistance, and the creation of OPEC
