House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that the vote in Quebec on secession from Canada should be clear warning to Americans that bilingualism poses a threat to unity in the United States. He also said that allowing bilingualism to grow in the United States is very dangerous, and that we should insist on English being the common language. He said that is what binds us together. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole also has embraced the idea of making English the official language of the United States. The Education Department's Office of Bilingual Education Dang Pham said, that comparing bilingualism in Canada and in the United States was like comparing apples to oranges. He said that Canada has two official languages, while the United States has one national language, English. He had also said the the language is not the true bond, that the true bond is that we share the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights. The Administration, however, has argued that English already operates as the official language of the United States and it has been critical of congressional attempts to curtail bilingual education. The Education Secretary Richard W. Riley said, obviously English is our national language and that new immigrants are trying to learn it as fast they can.
