Wyatt McCallum Modern Jewish Literature Professor Gealy October 2 nd , 2011 Response Paper #2 For this response paper I read “Short Friday” and “Taibele and Her Demon” by I.B. Singer. Both of the stories were tales focusing on the lives of devout Jews that ended in very surprising ways. Their endings are very abrupt, so much so that I was taken aback both times. They seem disconnected from the rest of the story, but they both attempt to send some kind of message. Although I feel they’re forced, I believe I.B Singer ended the stories the way he did for a reason. In “Taibele and Her Demon”, a match made in deceit turns out to be a sustaining life force for two people who normally would never interact. The story focuses on the relationship of Taibele and Alchonon, two people from different classes of society who surprisingly fall in love under a bizarre set of circumstances. Although Alchonon tricks Taibele into lying with him, they both derive comfort from the relationship and enjoy their time together. Their relationship is of
