Wyatt McCallum Discussion Make-Up Paper If we had lived during this period in history, our only source of knowledge of the people of the Americas would have been historical documents, such as this account written by Bartolome de las Casas. If we were able during our lifetimes to immigrate to North America, however, we would have been ill prepared for the natives that we would have discovered. Las Casas was certainly not the only writer of the time to harbor illusions and fantasies about the Native Americans that weren’t even close to true, but fortunately, he had a nobler reason for doing so than most. The main way that Las Casas portrays the people of the Americas incorrectly is by describing them as weak. He goes along with all other writers of the time by showing them as people “before the Fall” of humanity into sin, but he really stretches it when he says that no Native Americans are used to doing hard labor and they harbor no ambitions for power or deceit in their hearts.
