Matthew Thompson Journal Entry # 10 Section # 4 A reported statistic is that 80% of the time, the group outperforms the individual. This was exemplified in our class completion of “Adventure in the Amazon.” On average, the scores that resulted from group collaboration were much high than when the assessment was completed individually. So why is it that groups work? The fundamental reason is that a successful group will produce synergistic work – the outcome is greater than the sum of its parts. For example, two people with different knowledge bases may play off of each other and together come up with ideas that neither one could have come up with on their own. This is a principle that I came across when I was much younger and playing a video game called Mass Effect. In this game there is a race of networked artificial intelligences called the geth, who became sentient and began to question their masters, eventually winning the resulting war. Part of the geth's success is due to their neural network, which to me seems like the epitome of teamwork. They "share" their processing power, distributing low-level processes like motor control and visual identification to free up bandwidth for higher reasoning and complex thought. Essentially, in large groups they have more to think with; an individual geth has only a basic intelligence on par with animal instincts, but in groups they can reason, analyze situations, and use tactics. Thus I was exposed to a great example of how successful efficient group work can be, something which I then began to apply in real life. If groups succeed 80% of the time, then that means 20% of the time a group will
