Unformatted text preview: The light reactions require light and the dark reactions do not (although they do not require darkness, contrary to their name). In the light reactions, energy from sunlight empowers the photosynthetic apparatus to produce ATP and NADPH, which Exercise 2 Photosynthesis supply the energy and reducing power for the dark reactions. Water is split and oxygen is liberated as a by ­product. The net reaction can be written as follows: 2 NADP+ + ADP + Pi + 2H2 O + light ⇌ O2 + 2H+ + ATP + 2NADPH The Chloroplast Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast (refer to your textbook for a diagram).
